Mortality from gastrointestinal, respiratory, cardiovascular, and diabetes mellitus diseases is more common in obese than lean individuals.
In affluent and developed countries, the prevalence of obesity is usually inversely related to social class; according to statistics, more than one billion adults in the world are overweight and at least 300 million of them are clinically obese.
Although overweight is more common among men than women of the same age, obesity is more common among women and the number of women with high degrees of obesity is higher.
